Professionally engineered prompts communicate with AI, such as ChatGPT, on a whole other level. With such prompts, the AI knows precisely what and how to deliver.

Since you're reading this blog, you're familiar with how prompting works. Get this: over 90% of ChatGPT users' prompts are wrong. They get results that are far, far away from perfection.

What are the wrong parts in your AI prompts? How can you fix them and get results like pros? Let's figure it all out together!

You Ask Vague Questions That Confuse the AI

One of the most common mistakes people make is being too shallow when writing a prompt. What would AI respond to a prompt like, "Write an essay about birds in Amazon."

It is too generic and vague, and you cannot scratch even the surface of bird data in the Amazon forest.

A clear and professional prompt would be, 'Write an essay of about 3500 words with about only the 10 types of paradise birds found only in the Amazon Forest. Rank them based on their life span."

In short, the Lack of specificity leads to generic or unusable responses.

You Don't Understand Prompt Structuring Techniques

ChaGPT LLM (large learning models) are pre-trained based on a considerable number of texts and data. Basically, LLM is the ChatGPT's ability to understand and speak to you.

Structuring a prompt means the AI's LLM comprehends your instructions as you want.

You need to include key elements in your AI prompt.

  • Context - Introduce the topic or scenario.

  • Role - Assign ChatGPT a role.

  • Output - Mention the type of response you need.

For example, For example, instead of saying:

"Write a social media reel script around top AI tools."

Try:

"Act as a social media strategist. Write a 30-second Instagram reel script introducing the top 3 AI tools for content creators in 2025. Make it fun and engaging, and end with a call to action."

You Expect Results Without Refining and Iteration

ChatGPT thrives on refining—one-shot prompts often fall short. This means that sometimes, you must refine and guide the AI in the right direction.

Let's be real—most people expect a masterpiece after a single prompt. ChatGPT is not magic; it can only generate content that aligns with your instructions.

If you ask your chef to cook something, he might already know what you like and cook something worthwhile. He is a human who knows exactly what your taste buds crave at a particular time.

Similarly, go to a random restaurant and ask them to cook a steak. They might give you a medium rare since most people prefer it. However, you might not like it because you like it rare. Now, the same is true with ChatGPT.

You input a prompt, "Please generate a blog concerning top movies on Netflix."

ChatGPT read your prompt, processed it, and generated a random list of popular movies. However, the provided content is not valuable enough.

In the following prompt, you type, "Ensure these movies are Hollywood movies."

Another list comes up, but you still want to shorten the headings or include the year and main leads. Thus, you ask it to be more specific. And after 4 to 5 messages/prompts, you get your desired results.

In short, you're iterating and filtering the irrelevant results with each prompt and moving towards a masterpiece.

You Ignore the Power of Role-Based Prompts

Using defined personas (e.g., "Act as a marketing expert") increases the relevance of the generated content. Most GPT users often forget or skip this part.

In layman's terms, ChatGPT is a doctor, a historian, a financial advisor, a mechanic, a designer, a geek, and everything else you can think of combined in a single package.

It may not use 100% of its role-based capabilities and provide generic results if you don't specify a role. But you need specific and professional results. For this to happen, you must give it a role.

For example, you need a financial article. And you prompt, "Write a blog post on top performing oil stocks of 2024." It will give you a research-based blog.

But if you specify it, "You are an expert financial blogger. Please write a blog post on the top-performing oil stocks of 2024." This way, it will employ job-specific techniques and yield a pro-level blog post.

You Use Prompts Without Clear Goals or Outcomes

Goal-oriented prompts get sharper, actionable answers. Your prompt will backfire if you fail to specify the complete picture.

For example, "Give me YouTube content Ideas for Agriculture tips."

This prompt may look okay, but you failed to specify the place, type of content, and format.

So, the right prompt will be, "I own an agriculture tips channel about tips and tricks for crops and vegetables in Spanish lands. Act like an expert agricultural guru and give me a list of 10 content ideas for my YouTube shorts."

The new ChatGPT prompt assigns it a role and provides the specifics and format of the result. If you don't like something in the results, you can iterate and fine-tune them until you get the perfect outcome.
